Li Mu Bai, uno dei più grandi maestri di arti marziali, arriva nella città di Yuan insieme a Shu Lien, sua amica di vecchia data. Li incarica Shu di regalare la sua mitica spada a Sir Te, un nobile molto influente. Il guerriero, che ha dedicato molti anni all'arte della guerra, ha intenzione di cambiare vita e di ritirarsi nel monastero di Wudan. Lo scopo di Li è quello di rendere omaggio al suo maestro avvelenato da Volpe di Giada. Arrivata a destinazione Shu conosce Jen, la bella e giovane figlia del governatore, e tra le due donne nasce l'amicizia. Nel frattempo la spada, presa in custodia di Sir Te, viene rubata da un individuo mascherato, abilissimo nei combattimenti.
