Il 14 novembre 1965, il tenente colonnello Hal Moore e i suoi soldati (circa 400, tutti giovanissimi) giungono in Vietnam, nella Valle della Morte. Qui il primo battaglione del 7° Cavalleria - lo stesso reggimento del generale Custer - scopre ben presto di essere circondato da oltre 4000 vietcong, ma Moore decide di sferrare ugualmente l'attacco. Inizia così una delle battaglie più selvagge nella storia dell'esercito degli Stati Uniti.
