Katyn descrive la tragedia di una generazione seguendo la storia di quattro famiglie polacche le cui vite sono state devastate nel momento in cui, proprio all'inizio della seconda guerra mondiale, un grande numero (oltre 20.000) di soldati polacchi, finiti nelle mani delle truppe sovietiche, sono stati massacrati e gettati nelle fosse comuni. Il film mette anche in rilievo la difficile posizione della Polonia, durante la guerra e dopo, anche considerando che, fino al 1990, l’URSS ha attribuito il massacro ai nazisti.
