Un movimento separatista composto da decine di pianeti, appoggiato da potenti corporazioni, sta mettendo in serio pericolo il futuro della Repubblica. Pericolo che questa volta neanche i potenti cavalieri Jedi sembrano poter controllare. Per questo motivo il Supremo Cancelliere Palpatine autorizza la creazione di un esercito che affianchi nella imminente battaglia gli Jedi. In questa situazione, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padmé Amidala e Anakin Skywalker si ritrovano per la prima volta a distanza di anni dal loro primo incontro. Anakin, cresciuto, è ora apprendista Jedi di Obi-Wan. Entrambi hanno avuto l'incarico di vegliare su Padmé, l'ex regina di Naboo che ora è un influente membro del Senato della Repubblica. Indagando sugli attentanti alla vita della senatrice, Obi-Wan si spinge fino ai limiti estremi della galassia dove conosce prima un oscuro cacciatore di taglie, poi un ex maestro Jedi ora fra i capi della rivolta. Con Obi-Wan lontano Anakin e Padmé si avvicinano sempre di più l'uno al'altra. Ma il conflitto è in agguato.
